What Is PDGF Therapy?

Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) is a naturally occurring signaling protein your body already uses to repair tissue. In aesthetics, we apply that same biology on purpose: PDGF tells skin cells to multiply, build new collagen and elastin, and improve their own blood supply. The result is skin that looks healthier because it genuinely is healthier - not simply filled or resurfaced.

At SkinFX Medical Spa in Pasadena, PDGF therapy is performed by our medical team and tailored to your skin, whether you are treating early laxity, texture and scarring, dull tone, or thinning skin around the eyes and neck.

How It Works

Growth factors act as messengers. Once delivered into the skin, PDGF recruits repair cells to the treatment area and switches on the collagen-building cascade that slows with age, sun exposure and stress. Over the following weeks your skin rebuilds from within, so improvement is gradual, natural and cumulative.

  • Stimulates new collagen and elastin production
  • Improves microcirculation and nutrient delivery to the skin
  • Accelerates repair of texture, scarring and post-treatment healing
  • Strengthens thin, crepey or fragile skin over time

What to Expect

Your visit begins with a consultation and skin assessment. After cleansing and a topical numbing agent, PDGF is delivered into the skin - often paired with microneedling or a complementary treatment so the growth factors reach the layers where remodeling happens. Most sessions take about 45 to 60 minutes.

Expect mild redness and a warm, tight sensation for roughly 24 hours, similar to a light sunburn. Most patients return to normal activities the same or next day.

Your Results

Skin usually looks fresher within the first two weeks, while collagen-driven changes in firmness, tone and texture continue to build over two to three months. A series of three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart is typical, with maintenance once or twice a year. Because PDGF works with your own repair biology, results look like you - rested, smoother and more resilient.

Is PDGF Right for You?

PDGF therapy is a strong option if you want visible rejuvenation without surgery or significant downtime. It is especially well suited to patients with early skin laxity, acne scarring, uneven texture, dullness, thinning under-eye or neck skin, or anyone wanting to protect and extend the results of injectables and laser treatments. During your consultation we review your health history and goals to confirm you are a candidate and build the right plan.

PDGF (Platelet-Derived Growth Factor) FAQ

How is PDGF different from PRP?

Both rely on growth factors, but PRP is drawn from your own blood and varies in potency from person to person and visit to visit. PDGF therapy uses a standardized, concentrated growth factor formulation, so every session delivers a consistent dose without a blood draw.

Does PDGF treatment hurt?

Most patients describe it as very tolerable. We apply a topical numbing cream beforehand, and the sensation is usually limited to light pressure and warmth during the session.

How much downtime should I plan for?

Expect mild redness and a warm, tight feeling for about 24 hours. Most patients go back to work and normal activities the same or next day, avoiding heavy workouts and direct sun for 48 hours.

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients start with three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Depending on your skin and goals, we then recommend maintenance once or twice a year.

When will I see results?

Skin typically looks brighter and healthier within two weeks. Firmness and texture continue improving for two to three months as new collagen forms.

Can PDGF be combined with other treatments?

Yes. PDGF pairs well with microneedling, laser resurfacing, Botox and dermal fillers, and it is often used to support faster, smoother recovery after those treatments.
